What is Music

Feeds Us?

This year marks the third year of Music Feeds Us, a concert series designed to promote hunger relief, which Violist Fitz Gary and Cellist Avery Waite co-founded in 2012. Our free events, where audience members can make free-will monetary or canned food donations, have raised over 31,000 meals for theBlue Ridge Area Food Bank. In addition to chamber music benefit concerts that we host every year, we have also partnered with arts organizations, libraries, and schools to promote both classical music and hunger awareness. Through children’s concerts, we are raising awareness not only of chamber music’s inner-workings and the wonderful repertoire it brings, but also the often forgotten humanitarian issues, specifically hunger, which is still a major problem in our country. By educating the next generation on these issues, we hope to make a lasting difference in our community. Last year, at the end of our children’s concert at the Gordon Avenue Public Library in Charlottesville, Virginia, our audience of approximately thirty kids was thrilled to run up and offer their canned-food donation to Music Feeds Us. We hope to continue to build our project, creating a model and inspiration for others.
